They asked me, on the occasion of the celebration of his 90th birthday at Radio City Music Hall, what I thought Nelson Mandela’s impact on the world was. Honestly, I don’t recall exactly what I told that local news station that night when they stopped me outside the venue. I know I spoke of him being one of the greatest leaders in history, and about his fearlessness and determination, and his capacity to forgive, and sacrifice, and to put the needs of others above his own. I remember saying that the word impact just seemed too small a word to describe such a great man. I rambled on for at least five minutes, with tears in my eyes and bright lights in my face. Of course, all of that didn’t make it into the news clip. But all of his life, all of what he did for his country, and for his people, made me into what I hope is a better leader. A better person. That was a great night. He was a great man. Thank you, Madiba.
